La Cantina (sleeps 2) – Ground-floor, studio apartment
La Cantina, the cellar, was built and used for centuries to store the wine and to age the hams (prosciutto) and strings of sausage (salsicce). Today it serves as Cretaiole’s perfect place to have peace and quiet, or for bringing a baby whose crying will not bother anyone else in the farmhouse. This cozy, quaint ground floor apartment has no apartment above it. It is conveniently located with two independent entrances, one that leads to the yard and garden, and the other that enters onto the interior courtyard.
It has a homey environment with a kitchen that is captured cleverly in a lighted, antique armoire complete with stovetop, small refrigerator, sink, and cupboard full of dishes, cookware, and staples. An electric toaster and microwave oven make meals so easy. Once mealtime is over, the doors to the compact kitchen close and, voila! it transforms back into a beautiful piece of Italian furniture. This cozy little home includes a dining table just the right size for a snack or meal.
An atmospheric fireplace at the foot of the large, queen-sized bed will lull you to sleep with beautiful dreams. Plenty of wood is available for use in the fireplace, no charge. Window screens will protect you from insects and allow you to enjoy instead the beautiful Tuscan breeze. In the summer, fans are available to keep you cool.
La Cantina’s bathroom includes an enclosed shower and hairdryer.
Extra blankets and pillows are provided in the room. The built-in closet has plenty of hangers to accommodate your travel wear.
The visually stunning terracotta tile floor and the wood and tile beamed ceiling date back to the 1800s and have been beautifully restored. Don’t forget to bring your slippers or warm socks.
